I started this journey 10 years ago when my Dad gave me a random cpu program labeled “FL Studio 9”, and I begged my mom to get me a MacBook, but when I got to the store the salesman convinced me to go with an HP laptop with Beats audio built inside. It only took about 2 years for me and my brother to make a 10 song mixtape, and figure out how to put it out on DatPiff.com. We had no dream to be entertainers, no role models around the block that inspired our curiosity, no treacherous upbringing that left us looking for a way to escape, We just liked music and it was more fun to make it than to wait for it on “Album release Tuesdays”.
To this day, an entire Decade later, after countless hours lost behind computer screens slicing samples, thousands of dollars spent chasing recognition, and many plummets in defeat that ripened the plethora of moments that felt like we cracked the code.
The only thing that really fucks with me is that HP built the Beats Audio speakers into the bottom of that 2012 model laptop. For years I thought that was the dumbest shit ever, and had to either tune out all the noise around me to hear what I was creating, or use headphones and disconnect from the space completely.
